"The history department had a very important impact on my professional development. The study of the American experience – its traditions, contributions, limitations – was at the core of the LMU history department. The chair of the department was Tony Turhollow. His lectures were great, but I’ll never forget driving him from Capitol Hill to the White House where he had a meeting with President Carter in February 1978. Normally, that is a 10-minute drive, but it was the middle of a blizzard. It took 90 minutes. But he made it. Afterward we congratulated ourselves as two guys from California who could navigate the snow."
